Salmond Backs Pensioner Couple in bid to Save Winter Fuel Payment
Former First Minister and Alba Party Leader Alex Salmond is backing Coatbridge pensioner couple Peter and Flo Fanning who are suing the UK and Scottish Governments over the introduction of means testing for winter fuel payments without carrying out an Equality Impact Assessment as is required under the Equality Act 2010.
In a statement Mr Salmond said:
“The whole of Scotland knows that Scottish winters can start early and finish late. It is unacceptable in energy rich Scotland that our older citizens are afraid to turn on the heating in their own homes. This should not be happening. Something should be done about it and Peter and Flo Fanning are doing something about it.
“Peter and Flo deserve the support of everyone in Scotland for having the guts and gumption to take on the UK and Scottish Governments for their action in the case of Westminster and inaction in the case of Holyrood.
“Peter and Flo are taking on the might of both governments London and Edinburgh. My money is on Coatbridge!”
