ALBA Announce Candidates for July Election
“We intend to mobilise the Scottish independence vote” - SALMOND
Alex Salmond’s ALBA Party have announced a widespread intervention in the July 4th General Election under the slogan “Make your vote count for independence”
The ALBA campaign will be launched in Glasgow on Friday and will feature 19 ALBA candidates plus support for independent candidate Angus Brendan MacNeil in Na h-Eileanan an lar (Hebrides). This is twice the level of candidates required to secure a Party Election Broadcast and broadcast coverage.
This is the first time ALBA have contested any Westminster seat and they will include in their team of candidates, Neale Hanvey, who won Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy as an independent nationalist in 2019, Kenny MacAskill who will contest Alloa and Grangemouth on a “Save Grangemouth” platform and former MPs George Kerevan and Corri Wilson.
Mr SALMOND said;
“Every vote for ALBA in this election will count for Scottish independence. We will introduce people to our argument that independence requires to be won in a direct mandate in a national election. In two years time, at the Scottish election, this argument will be brought to fruition when ALBA will win 15 per cent of the list vote and 20 or more seats.
This General Election is now centred on the realignment of the right in English politics, ALBA believe that it will also point the way to realigning the national movement in Scotland.
50 per cent of people believe in independence but only around 30 per cent are prepared to vote SNP. ALBA are saying to these people, don’t stay at home and certainly don’t vote for unionist Labour. Move to ALBA and help reinvigorate the national cause in Scotland.
That is why ALBA are mobilising the independence vote by offering people something worth voting for, in seeking a clear mandate for Scottish independence”
Alex Salmond has also announced that he will stand as a candidate in the Banffshire and Buchan Coast constituency for his pro-Independence ALBA Party at the 2026 Scottish Parliament election. He represented the equivalent Westminster constituency, Banff and Buchan, from 1987 to 2010.
Speaking after a Press Briefing in Westminster today, the Former First Minister said:
“ALBA believe that each and every election should be used to seek a mandate for Independence secured by the independence parties achieving a majority of the votes.
“The 2026 Scottish Parliament election will be a crucial election and ALBA can now guarantee that every single voter will have an ALBA candidate to vote for, as we are currently the only party with a plan to deliver independence for Scotland.
“I intend to lead ALBA into an independence coalition government in that Scottish Parliament, and for our Party to be the backbone of the administration which takes our country to independence”
