ALBA Equalities - Update from Suzanne Blackley

This past week, I chaired an Alba Equalities meeting focused on the ongoing negative rhetoric surrounding migrants in the press and on social media. We have all seen the “Stop the Boats” headlines and the alarming rise of Reform UK, however the issue goes much deeper. The growing trend of pitting one group of people against another across society is deeply concerning and one I hope we can explore much further.
As always, I enjoy engaging with party members, and Thursday’s well-attended meeting was no exception. We had an in-depth discussion around the failures of the asylum system, failures that lie squarely at the feet of the UK Government, not those held in accommodation across the UK awaiting processing, many of whom have been living here in limbo for years.
While opinions varied, the conversation was both productive and respectful. My fellow colleagues from the National Executive Committee, Marjorie Thompson and Neale Hanvey, contributed valuable insights on how our party can shift the narrative toward one that fosters positive change. Members discussed potential solutions to migration into Scotland, recognising the importance and value of newcomers while acknowledging the distinctions between Scotland and other parts of the UK.
As we all know, the union does not serve Scotland’s interests, only with independence can we make the changes that best serve us. This meeting sparked meaningful dialogue on a critical issue, one that we know will come up on the doorsteps leading into Holyrood 2026. We must be prepared to answer these questions, and I look forward to continuing these conversations with members on this and other important topics in the months ahead.
I am pleased to share with members that I have also taken steps to make our upcoming conference more accessible. I have requested that a quiet space be set aside within Lauriston Hall for anyone who may need a sensory break from the main proceedings. Additionally, there will be an Equalities stall offering leaflets with information on various support services available in Scotland. Volunteers will be present to assist those with mobility and neurodivergence needs. I, myself have visited the hall and can confirm that disabled bathroom facilities are available, and the venue is accessible for those with mobility requirements.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at conference.
