Call for Scottish Parliament to honour Andy Murray

THE Scottish Parliament has been asked to support a motion calling on the Scottish Government honour the achievements and legacy of Andy Murray.

Alba Party’s Holyrood leader Ash Regan MSP has tabled the motion to pay tribute to “one of Scotland’s greatest ever athletes” upon his retirement last night.

Murray retired from professional tennis last night following his appearance in the Paris Olympic Games, where he partnered Daniel Evans to the quarter-finals of the men's doubles event.

The 37-year-old will be remembered for a career full of historic achievements, which he accomplished against some of the best players in the history of tennis.

In her Scottish Parliament motion Regan lists out the achievements - which include 739 career wins, 3 Grand Slam titles and 2 Olympic Gold medals - as she called for cross party support across the Parliament to back the Scottish Government bringing forward plans to “suitably honour” Murray’s legacy. Alba say this could include long lasting investment in the next generation of young tennis players.

Ms Regan’s party have long advocated for free access to sports facilities for Scotland’s young people and they are hopeful that Murray will act as an inspiration to the next generation of young Scots regardless of whether they enter sport to become champions or to have fun and live a healthier life.

The motion tabled by Ash Regan will be available for other members of the Scottish Parliament to sign from today and Alba believe it will be one of the most popular motions ever brought forward to the Parliament.
