Public Back Alex Salmond’s Strategy on the Eve of Key Independence Vote at SNP Conference

Public Back Alex Salmond’s Strategy on the Eve of Key Independence Vote at SNP Conference

The Alba Party has today (Saturday) published poll findings which reveals that 6 in 10 Scots back the alternative Independence strategy set out by the Alba Party, which was conceived and executed by the late Alex Salmond, as being a "legitimate" way for "Independence to be pursued".

The public were asked: "Suppose that pro-independence parties achieve over 50% of the vote in a Scottish Parliament election, having included in their manifestos a commitment that this would be the threshold to deliver independence. In this case, would you consider it legitimate or not legitimate for independence to be pursued on that basis?"

When Don't Knows are excluded 60% said that it was either "definitely legitimate" or "probably legitimate" for "independence to be pursued on that basis".

The poll was commissioned by the Alba Party and conducted by the reputable polling organisation Find Out Now. The sample size was 1,165 with the fieldwork carried out between the 1st and 8th of October.  The final sample is weighted to be nationally representative by Gender, Age, Scottish Region and 2024 General Election vote.

Commenting on the results Alba Party Leader Kenny MacAskill said:

"This sensational poll shows that the public back Alba's plan as a clear route for achieving Independence through a democratic vote in a Scottish Parliament election.

"The delegates at SNP conference should take note. The public believe that over 50% in a Scottish Parliament Election is a 'legitimate' route to pursue Independence. There is no reason why every independence supporter should not now get behind this strategy.

"This poll points the way to how we achieve Independence.  Now that it is clear that this strategy is not only credible but popular, commanding as it has the support of 6 in 10 voters, Alba urges all of the pro-independence parties to get on board and to back this winning plan.

"John Swinney must give a lead and state unequivocally that the SNP will include in their manifesto for the 2026 Holyrood Election that  50% of the vote cast for pro-independence parties will be the mandate to negotiate Independence.  No more handing Scottish sovereignty over to Westminster, no more allowing Starmer a veto over a Referendum.

"This poll puts beyond doubt that the people of Scotland have a clear, credible and popular route to achieve Independence.  The Independence movement must now take it!"
