MacAskill: With independence we could go "so much further, so much faster"
In response to the Scottish Government’s draft budget, ALBA Party Leader Kenny MacAskill said:
“We welcome the Scottish Government’s draft budget for the steps it takes in alleviating child poverty, providing relief for small businesses, and shifting the tax burden onto those who can afford to pay more - all of which are a stark contrast to the recent UK Labour budget.
“However, it does highlight that the current devolution settlement offers only limited flexibility where the Government is forced to tinker around the edges.
“As a part of the Union, we live with the absurdity of an energy rich nation where fuel poverty is rampant and industry is crucified by energy costs. With full control of our wealth and resources, we could go so much further, so much faster.
“That is why it is vital that the Scottish Government change its position and put the question of independence on the ballot paper at the Holyrood election this May. That is what the independence movement is screaming out for, and it is what we in ALBA will be doing.”
