SNP Conference Independence Debate - Alba Reaction

Reacting to the vote at SNP Conference on the SNP’s Independence strategy Alba Party Leader, Kenny MacAskill said:

“This vote is a missed opportunity to unite the independence movement and pursue a clear, credible and popular strategy to seek and achieve a mandate for independence.

“The SNP has effectively handed a veto to Westminster over whether or not Scotland can be become independent, even if there is a pro-independence majority after next year’s election.

“They are putting the electoral interests of the SNP ahead of the needs of the country.

“There will be huge disappointment among the grassroots members of the SNP, the 43 branches who backed the plan conceived by Alex Salmond and the wider independence movement.

“The public, in polling published today by Alba, have said that using a national election to pursue independence is legitimate.

“That remains the correct strategy and will continue to be pursued by Alba at each and every national election. Every vote for Alba on the list is a vote for Independence and a pro-independence majority in the Scottish Parliament.”
