SNP reject Alba Party motion seeking to secure independence at 2026 election
THE Scottish Parliament has today rejected an attempt by Alba Party to state that the 2026 Holyrood election will be used as a de facto referendum on independence.
Alba Party’s Holyrood leader Ash Regan MSP lodged an amendment to today’s marquee debate in the Scottish Parliament marking the 10th anniversary of the independence referendum.
Ms Regan laid out a plan to restore independence to the top of the Scottish Parliament’s agenda. The Alba Party MSP called for a constitutional convention and for the Scottish Parliament election in 2026 to be used to allow the people of Scotland to vote on their future.
However, SNP and Green MSPs joined with unionist members of the Scottish Parliament to defeat Regan’s attempt by 125 votes to 1.
Commenting Alba Party Holyrood leader Ash Regan MSP said:
“A simple majority of pro-independence votes on the Scottish Parliamentary list vote will provide the clear, democratic mandate needed to push forward with Scottish independence.
“It’s time to put democracy in top gear and give the people of Scotland the voice they deserve. Scotland’s future will not be decided by Westminster but by the people of Scotland.
“Our nation is rich in resources and talent. We deserve better than merely surviving in this managed decline. Together, we can build a thriving, prosperous, independent Scotland.”
