MacAskill Invokes the Spirit of 2014 in Appeal to Pro-Independence Parties

Alba Party Leader Kenny MacAskill has invoked the spirit of the Independence Referendum in 2014 to appeal to the leaders of the other pro-Independence parties to support his call issued on Saturday at the All Under One Banner (AUOB) Rally for all the pro Independence parties to come together to agree a way forward for achieving Independence.

Mr MacAskill who had already written to SNP Leader John Swinney MSP has now written to Patrick Harvie MSP and Lorna Slater MSP, Co-Convenors of the Scottish Green Party, Colin Fox and Natalie Reid, Co-Convenors of the Scottish Socialist Party and Collette Walker, Leader of the Independence for Scotland Party urging them to support an Independence Summit which can chart a way forward, for example, by including a "clear and unambiguous statement" in their manifestos, in favour of a plebiscite election.

Referring, in the letters to the Independence Referendum campaign Kenny MacAskill said:

"I am sure you will agree that the referendum was an exciting time for those involved, and one on which we can all look back on with a great deal of pride in the biggest participatory event in Scottish Democracy.

"Key to the campaign was the ability to work with individuals with whom we did not agree on everything, but with whom we agreed on the fundamental principle of Scottish Self Determination, that the people of Scotland are sovereign."

Kenny MacAskill concluded:

"Surely now. as we face a Westminster Government refusing to grant a second Independence Referendum, despite a majority of pro-Independence MSPs at Holyrood and a majority of the votes cast on the list for pro-Independence parties, we must be able to work together for Independence."
