Where We Stand

Taking Action

The ALBA Party stands for a fair, compassionate Scotland where social security is treated as a basic human right, not a political punchbag. We reject Westminster’s attacks on benefits and the toxic narrative that paints claimants as “lazy” or “undeserving.” This rhetoric causes real harm, adding stigma and exclusion to those already facing illness, caring duties, or financial hardship.

Social security is not a handout, it is a vital safety net that ensures dignity and support when life takes an unexpected turn. Any one of us could need it through ill health, accident, or misfortune. The vast majority of claimants are genuine, and they deserve respect, not demonisation.

We know the real barriers lie in broken systems, not broken people. NHS waiting lists trap the long-term sick in poverty, while carers and families struggle without adequate support. Scotland can and must do better.

That is why ALBA is committed to:

- Challenging hostile media and party narratives about “scroungers.”

- Promoting a fair, truthful picture of social security as a safety net against poverty and inequality.

- Strengthening policies on healthcare, employability, and carer support to ensure people get the help they need.

We believe in a Scotland where compassion is stronger than stigma. Social security should lift people up, not drag them down.
