Where We Stand

A Land of Energy Plenty

The ALBA Party condemns the closure of Grangemouth Refinery, a decision that damages Scotland’s economy, devastates communities, undermines energy security, and worsens environmental outcomes. While the UK Government intervenes to protect steel in Scunthorpe, Scotland’s vital energy infrastructure is being abandoned.

At the same time, hundreds of thousands of jobs are being lost in the North Sea due to UK Government policy, with only a token dispersal of civil service posts to Aberdeen. The Scottish Government’s weak opposition to these closures, and its failure to back continued North Sea development, has compounded the damage.

ALBA believes that:

- North Sea development remains essential for Scotland’s economy and for the communities that built the industry over generations.

- A genuine Just Transition to renewables is only possible if Scotland retains energy security and protects skilled employment during the shift.

- Scotland must fully benefit from its own energy wealth, not see it squandered by Westminster or neglected by Holyrood.

ALBA will fight to protect Scotland’s energy assets, defend jobs, and ensure that future prosperity is built on both our traditional industries and renewable potential.
